Protect or Redact a PDF: Choosing the Right Tool
Encryption controls access to a file. Redaction removes content from the version you share. Cropping and visible signatures serve different purposes.
Password protection
Protect PDF adds encryption locally and requires a password to open the result. Save the password securely; the website cannot recover it for you. Share a password through an appropriate separate channel.
Unlock PDF removes encryption only when you supply the current password. It does not guess passwords or bypass a document owner’s protection.
Remove private content
Redact PDF blacks out one selected rectangle and rebuilds all pages as images. It removes the original text, forms, links and attachments. The current tool supports up to 100 pages and handles upright page placement.
Cropping hides margins and is not a method for securely removing confidential content. Review the redacted output visually and try selecting or searching the sensitive text before sharing. Keep the unredacted source private.
Understand visible signatures
Sign PDF places a typed, drawn or uploaded signature image on a page. This is a visible mark, not certificate-based digital signing or an identity-verification service.
Confirm the recipient’s signature requirements. Review the entire output, including page count and signature position. Local processing helps keep files on your device, but it does not establish legal acceptance or a security certification.
