How to Make a Scanned PDF Searchable with OCR

A scanned PDF may look like a normal document while containing only pictures. OCR recognizes characters so text can be searched and selected.

Recognize English text

Open OCR PDF and select a scanned PDF. NivaFile’s local engine recognizes English and supports up to 30 pages per run. The recognition assets download from the site on first use.

Wait for the pages to finish, then download the searchable PDF. Processing uses your device, so a slower phone or a long document can take more time. Split a larger document into smaller parts when needed.

Review recognition errors

Blurry scans, skewed pictures, faint print and complex layouts can cause mistakes. Check names, dates, numbers and punctuation against the page images. Searchable text is helpful, but recognition is not a guarantee of accuracy.

The resulting PDF includes recognized text over page images. If you need a plain-text file, open the searchable result in PDF to Text. That exporter reads selectable text; it cannot recognize a picture on its own.

Photos and editable documents

To start with document photos, use Scan to PDF to combine JPG or PNG images. It does not include live camera capture or perspective correction. Review the photos for clarity before converting.

PDF to Word exports selectable text into editable paragraphs. It does not reconstruct the original images, tables or page layout. Review any exported document before submitting or sharing it.
